I didn't know that when King Charles III cried, that crab legs fell from his eyes. Must be King crabs!

That 1773 is a neat piece... crude in the style of a contemporary (that is, old, of the time they circulated) counterfeit.

About that 1773 piece. Could it be worth something to a collector of counterfeits? Just curious.
Here's some edge pictures:

The gold coin looks like and reminds me of a gold peso found on ebay.
When it was wiped with a Q-tip dipped in acetone the Q-tip turned gold and the coin had a bare spot.

Though it's "in the style of" a contemporary counterfeit (in that it has custom engraving... rather than an exact transfer of the actual design features)... it's a modern replica, so not really.

Erba too bad you are in the Netherlands. The 1773 is not in GNL Book but I see some interesting things possibly making it 19thC maybe Gurney would call this Class 2 or Class 4- Oddity.
See here RW:

1. The die flaw in G of GRATIA.
2. The R of GRATIA made into an R from a P punch. CCC-ish.
3. The missing top of 8 in 8R a commonality in this CCC Family.
4. Its overall crudeness.
5. The irregularity and non-uniformity of the O openings of the edge design.

The 1809 is a modern cast piece of garbage. But I sure like to run an XRF scan on this 1773. Perhaps you are right RW if in your records. Its on the edge IMO for a GNL Class 1?

I see your point RW with that overall bust design having that modernism look but everything else goes away from it - legends and reverse. Again not in GNL. Interesting piece IMO. Class 4 - oddity? Intriguing.

Hi CJ. I'm actually in Cusco for a few more days. If you're interested I could ask for its price.

Ask ... then PM me the details. That's my middle name is risk = John (Risk) Lorenzo or is it John (Dummy) Lorenzo. <VVBG>

It depends on the price and the gold content ... LOL. Roll the dice on this one ...

John, a lot of the tourist-market type Latin Amer.-made replicas have this character to them... cruder, even now more "native" in artistic sensibility. The resemblance to what you'd see on a contemporary counterfeit is, I would think, no mistake... as I'm sure the dies aren't prepared in all that different of a manner as they were back then.

I suppose it's not totally out of the realm of possibility that it could be older... but from the physical execution (especially the rim/denticle area... and relief/strength of strike), I'm pretty confident it's modern rather than "de epoca".

I always consider your Word Final. I only have 10 years in Spanish/American ... you know my real expertise is in U.S. Colonials.

Takes a lifetime ... but if it was $25 I would purchase it and bring it into the lab ... FOR SURE. <VVBG>.

But this is why sometimes I get stuck with 19thC U.K. Ferdinand VI gold pieces and 1992 Italian Confederate replicas to promote chocolate bar sales ! (don't ask) ... LOL.

CJ, unfortunately I was not able to buy the coin and I have left Cusco, travelling from city to town in Peru but keeping a sharp eye for those pieces of eight ;-)
