Here's a Portguese 1000 reis I picked up recently. Seemed
priced too low for such a limited mintage (AUS$40) so I had
little to lose - fakes are as interesting in some ways as
genuine coins, imho. It isn't magnetic, ring seems a trifle
high-pitched and weight is a tad low: 27.24g. What do you think?

This looks bad.

Here are the images of a counterfeit coin straight from China:

Portugal-1000-Reis-1845

Portugal-1000-Reis-1845

Note how many details match...
- the denomination which looks like it says '1009 REIS' with a line between the second zero and the nine,
- strange leaf-shaped incuse area around REIS,
- scratch right of shield,
- barely visible cross atop the coat of arms,
- hit on the nose,
- crater between the head and the bun...

Guy parry, sorry I agree It is a fake.
The best way to convince oneself is to compare it with a genuine coin:

Notice those short lines on the neck and cheek? Some look like small triangles- perhaps two or three or four maybe connected with a short thin line? Those marks are found on many Chinese fakes. I'm not sure what causes them. I was thinking maybe a took mark for grabbing a hot coin or maybe these coins fall on edge as they pile up.

Yes, that last pic is pretty definitive, but as I
said, only forty bucks.
