There was a posting on here about using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide for raising the date on Buffalo nickels. I gave it a try tonight and it worked great.

I had about a dozen coins and each one is now in my coin book except for one that I already had. This isn't very hard to do since my buffalo's are mostly newer and there are not many of them.

One of the coins looked like it had been dug out of a paved road or some such past and it cleaned up nice. I had more trouble reading the mint mark than the date.

I still haven't been able to take pictures that look very good and are not blurry. Some of the dates are fairly easy to read and others not so well. I will try and take some pictures.
Rest in Peace

I found the same problem when I used peroxide and vinegar on hundreds of dateless Buffalos I stumbled across about a year ago . Most would show 4 visible digits ,while some would only show 1 or 2 digits . and a small hand full showed nothing .

Yep it does work. When I did it I should have taken before and after pics but just never thought of it.

I put one in a solution and I forgot about it so when I woke up in the morning the liquid was very blue and there was blue stuff in all the ridges and scratches of the coins. It actually looked scary. After scrubbing the blue off with a toothbrush the coin was like completely white and it couldn't have looked more cleaned but I got the date and it was 1917 so that's pretty neat.

This is the best image I could get. My phone works the best, but none of the pictures showed the date. This picture shows the raised date but it can't be read at all. The date is 1916. I was very pleased that I could take a coin, which had no date at all, and come up with a date, which required a magnifying glass, legible enough to put in my coin book.

But then I need a glass for almost all of the coins I look at, especially when I am looking at the mint marks.

Vinegar, without the Hydrogen Peroxide, will also work, it just takes alot longer to work(a couple of days). A friend of mine says that tabasco sauce works great. I've found that certain dates like 1915-s, 1921-s, 1914-d, 1924-s will fully restore, with a sharp date while 1913-s, 1913-d, 1926-s, 1915-d are very hard to get the date to show.

I am missing every one of those dates, along with many more! It is interesting how some dates restore just fine and other don't.
