As I'm trying to research around in this forum I keep getting directed to topics that my iPhone can't load.. am I doing something wrong or is this common?

Finished separating the quarters by year yesterday... haven't had a chance to go through anything yet... probly going to start separating the dimes next...

Fireball,

If you have an iPad or laptop I feel that is the best way to fully access this site. Sometimes using this site on a smartphone can be annoying at times. I have had zero issues using it here on my iPad and laptop.

Good luck, hope you find some good ones! You could make one of those penny floors out of the ones you would cash in. Would be a neat way to remember him and definitely a conversation piece.

I've probably sorted through close to $5K face value so far just in dollars, 1/2's, and quarters... on to the dimes now!

Once they're all sorted by date and mint... dunno if I should check each one for errors, or just separate the high ms grade types and search those... I realize quality of coin greatly impacts the value... but I'm not sure yet which ones are valuable in almost any condition...

I'm sure I'll have a much better handle on things when I get to that point... I'm doing constant research on rarities and varieties whenever I have down time, as well as watching vids when I'm sorting...

I may look into making certain keepsakes with copper coins when the time comes... like a glass lamp grandpa had beside his bed filled with bright shiney pennies. ;-) Was kind of cool to see.

More to come as I make more progress.

Pics... not much to see yet... just sorting out the denominations and years so far... making a mess of the kitchen table in the meantime... lots of ziplock bags full of coins so far... once I get to the step of investigating varieties I'll definitely start posting pics! ;-)

FireballXL5,
The lower the scope goes the better. 5x-150x is plenty.

You can get a reference book, like the Red Book, or look them up on Numismedia Fair Market Value. No source is 100% accurate for every coin for every day of the year, but you will have an idea. Or check out US Coin Facts (left column)on this site to see what years are Key Dates, that is low mintage.

Two volume set - "Cherry Picker's Guide" - will be of THE greatest value for the info and guidance you are seeking.

I'm sure that once I start searching varieties that I'll pick up the cherry pickers guides... is the Red Book equivalent or better/worse?

Still need to research the right USB microscope... but I've still got a little bit of time before I get to that point.

Now, if only I could stop the neck strain from leaning over the kitchen table while sorting dates on the coins I'd be set! Lol

And I'm sure this forum will become invaluable in grading my finds as I come across them... thank you in advance!

P.S. Every time I try to look up the us coin facts on my iPhone, it has an error loading the page and locks me out of the site... I do have a laptop I could use, but I typically do all my research on my iPhone 6 Plus...

Just to show you how pics aren't really worth much yet at this point... here's how I've got the $1 and 1/2 dollar coins sorted out for now...

Don't spend any dimes quarters and halves from 1964 and earlier they are silver. Also halves 1965-1970 don't spend either, they're 40% silver.
