Just got the grade back on this one. A friend took the pictures. I paid $45 or so.

On the fence with this one. The obverse is missing a lot of stripe detail (either due to wear or weak strike), but the reverse is quite nice all around. I'd say VF20 for the obverse and XF45 for the reverse. (So net VF30 is where I'd call it.)
And the date looks quite strange, too.

Reverse looks AU. Obverse has weakness, mostly from strike I assume but it seems odd that the reverse is very well struck. Perhaps the obverse die itself was worn and damaged. That could account for the poorly-formed date digits. I'd guess PCGS gave it a compromise grade of XF-45.

Quite a disparity of grades per side on that one. Really Like the rays, good die, clear strike, too bad reverse stinks. Coulda had a solid AU if that bad die had been replaced, depending on TPG, ANACS would say XF45, PCGS say EF40 details, cleaned.

I would say that the reverse is Mint State, and obverse might have enough of a rub to take it down to AU-55. The coin is very poorly struck which was not unusual for these pieces that were made from "the devil's copper." The hard copper-nickel alloy ate up dies and resulted in poorly made coins. If the gap between dies was not set properly, the coins often looked like this. The question for the obverse is where does the poor strike end and the rub begin? Also has the date been scrapped or is that how it was struck? I'd say AU-55 on this, although MS-60 or 61 is not impossible if the graders gave the obverse a partial pass.

Interesting analysis. I would have thought mid-AU at best.

That coin is $400-$500 in ms62. $100 less seems a little strong. Keep us posted about what you are able to sell this for. Very curious. And congrats again.

"MS-62" is too high by at least two grading points. Paying MS-62 money for that piece is a purchase of registry points not the coin.
