I have seen this doubling of edge lettering on several different years and designs in the National Park series. Where the lettering and date are not raised but "sunk in" to the coin what is the best way to determine if this is Machine Doubling vs double die? Do the signs of double die still apply the same as old style lettering..ie split serifs and rounded secondary image? Would love some help on these.. seen several of these over the past couple of years.. thank you..

I am intrigued by this. It does not look like regular MD to me, but also doesn't seem to be a regular DD.
I would love to hear from coop on this one.

That's because the letters are embossed.

These devices are incuse on the coin (sunk into the coin) and raised on the die. So the slightest MD causes the devices to enlarge. On incuse devices if they are hub doubled, they are reduced in size, not enlarged. (just the opposite as the raised devices) I have yet to see the ATB Quarters show this reduction, and probably won't as the single squeeze method usually altered more of the central devices and not the out devices. We have seen the internal incuse devices reduced on the shield cents EPU:

Bit I'm still hoping to see them even though they probably won't happen. (I'm getting close to my goal of 100 ATB Quarters to gathered randomly from circulation to see what percentage of them have this issue. But I feel it will be a high number when calculated.
