Bossy Flossy, I think that it might be a thing with different banks, I think that it might be a little easier if you actually have an account with them. But I almost got the same response you did when I went for my first batch. The Teller at the bank told me they only keep less then $10 in any coin in there counter. Then she remembered hey had just had a customer deposit a lot of coin, and found they had $50 in 50c.

They mentioned if I was wanting to withdraw coin on a regular basis I should call the day before and arrange it. Which I can understand but I havent worried about it yet. To busy with work and such to get much time for noddling. Maybe I need to get some for the long weekend.

If you have an account with a bank you can withdraw cash from your account in any denomination in any amount that you like. I will quantify that by agreeing with Joel, if they don't have the coins, you aren't going to get them. I simply phone the branch that I am going to and tell them what I want and they tell me when I can come and get them, be it that day or next week.

I find it is much easier for the teller if you simply withdraw from your account and deposit back into your account. Ask the teller for coin bags and make sure you only put into each bag what it says to put into them. When you deposit again the teller wont count the coins but weigh them. This makes it quick and easy for the teller. If you are dealing with a large amount of coins, it never hurts to ask when is the best time for them to deal with you. By keeping things easy for the bank, you will never have a problem.

Let us know what you find bossy. And may I ask just how bossy you are? (Got to make sure the wife is not looking over my shoulder, I call her the bossy one)

haha well my partner says very very very bossy, but I dont thinks thats true, we call my daughter glossy flossy because she is so gorgeous, so somehow I ended up with bossy flossy...

anyway back to the topic, I had great success at my regular bank, I now have $200 worth of 50c and 20c, that will keep me busy over the weekend

i need to write a list of coins I still need and any other that might be worth keeping

any suggestions would be great?

Bossy have you got McDonalds guide yet? This or Renniks guide really are invaluable for collectors, not just for values, but for mintage figures and general info as well.

Coins to look out for for both 20c & 50c are all the commemoratives.

In 20c, the 1966 wavy 2 is the holy grail of 20c so look out for that. The 2 in 20 isn't straight but has a little "wave" in it. Very, very collectible. Look also for all the early years up to 1974. Then there are the mint set only years which sometimes make it into circulation. 1986, 87, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 95. Then there is 1983 & 84, supposedly minted in the millions, but never seen.

In the 50c, again the early years up to 1974. And mint set only. 1986, 87, 89, 90, 92. Also 1979 and 1980 double bar. Best do a search of the forum or google for those so you know what to look for.

Hope this helps.

One more I forgot for the 50c, the 2000 millennium has two different varieties. The cross on the union jack is raised and the federation star has a rough field in the common variety.

In the rarer variety, the cross is incused, or lower than the surround, and the star has a smooth field.

Bossy, never, ever be afraid to ask something here. I am still learning after 20 years. We all started out in the same place, the beginning. If I had access to a forum like this 20 years ago, I think my collection would be bigger and better and I would not have made half the mistakes I had. (I say only half because sometimes I'm too stupid to listen to good advice :) )

To add to latmans post.. Cause I had to.. lol....

20 cent: 1971 is the rare one, 1985 and 1988 is like yea.... You don't really hope to find one.. LOL..... Look for UNC ones in the early years.... I generally toss away the earlier ones if they are not in aUNC or UNC, unless its 1971.... 2001 COF is what you would generally hope to find with some success.. 1966 wavy.... thats a tough one.... Never found one myself.... Hopefully I will, but that is the KING.... Worth at least 200 in any condition.... At least.....

50 cent: Early years, like latman said.... I generally only look for UNc ones though... I toss away the rest..... Even the low mintage years like 1972 and 1973.... Generally, they look crap, without luster... Then theres the awesome incused flag.... Probably the rarest 50 cent to look for as of now? I think...... 200 000 mintage..... Its rare, but its out there.... So keep looking..., but you will get disappointed of course until you find one Then the rare low mintage 50 cents: 1985, 1993 about 1 million mintage...... Once again, rare but still out there..... Then theres the 1997, which is somewhere in the mintages of 1973 and 1972, but this time most of them possess luster, so I keep them... 1966 round 50 cent.... Not rare, but because its round.... Massively slim chance of finding one.... Its value largely lies in its silver content.... Then all the 2001 COF are worth keeping, same as the COf 20 cents.... BTW... COF = Centenary of Federation

Owh last thing I forgot.... 2004 Large Head/Big Head 20 cent...... 400 000 mintage..... Once again RARE... but out there... Not many people know about it, cause its not obvious.... But yea..... The words are closer to the rim...... Queens head is larger.... and the A's are pointed instead of flat.... To see pictures, head off to variety forum... Theres a thread on that I think..... Phew... Enough of me talking...... Wish you luck in your first noodling....

PS: I don't noodle, but because I work at maccas, its like noodling while working.. LOL....

G'day, quote: "Then theres the awesome incused flag.... Probably the rarest 50 cent to look for as of now? ... , but its out there.... So keep looking..., but you will get disappointed of course until you find one" -
I have one incuse flag, which I found from circulation last year. It cost me fifty cents.
I think the dolden rule of noodling is probably this -
"the harder I look, the luckier I get".
