Went to my local shop today and found this beauty raw in a box full of miscellaneous coins... I basically got it for melt. I'm super excited about it! Can anyone help me out with some info on the coin? I know it is a Silver Lavaliere coin removed from the bezel, which is likely why the rim has some damage. Just wanted to share and see if I could learn anything else about the coin! I read through the "Commem's Collection" post, so I want to keep digging for information and any help is appreciated!

Very nice pick up! I would suggest tracking down the August 1987 issue of the ANA's The Numismatist. It features an article by Adna Wilde, Jr., a respected expert on counterstamped Stone Mountain half dollars. The article's title is "Counterstamped Stone Mountain half dollars, where are they today?" The article includes a census of counterstamped Stone Mountains. Wilde lists a "TENN" counterstamp with "22" and "SL" but he does not list a "17." Over the last 20 years, a number of new counterstamp state/number combinations have surfaced, but the article is still a great foundation for learning about these pieces. The article was also reprinted as as small booklet by the ANA.

Thanks!
Commems, would it be worth it to send for authentication at ANAAB like you mention in your post? I'd like to do that and/or send to PCGS.
Info on these is tough to find. Will keep searching for the Wilde article.

Very nice find indeed! Too bad it was removed from the original bezel ... but quite a treasure indeed at melt value. If you are a member of the ANA, you can search the on-line database for a copy of the article commems mentions. Thanks for sharing the coin HONDO David

The entire run of The Numismatist is available - for free - to ANA members. It's one of many benefits of membership!
