Is This A Large S Or Small S On This 1941 Nickel?

Haven't done a lot of research yet, but think the difference in mint mark size stems from at least two different punches used this year. Location of the mint marks can vary as they were hand punch on the dies. Thanks, Doug. Report this Post to the Staff

The easiest thing to do is get a 1940-S nickel and compare the mint mark as they all have the same size "S" as the early 1941-S nickels... the ones struck very late in 1941 have the new punch (large "S")... I've found a lot of 1941-S nickels over the years, and have around a dozen of the Large S variety. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! In this case (and every other mintmark before 1990) they are hand-punched and vary so the location is not important in determining whether it's small or large. The comparison is only of the MM itself. Yours is a small S. coop's comparison shows a clear difference in size and design between the two.
