I remember reading something about if the S is below the window it's a large? Is

Thank you both. I was looking at the link and ia bit confused. When I take a ruler to the bottom of the s it's lower than the window correct? Or am I doing this wrong?

Looking at Coops examples does the small s looks a little flatter on top compared to the large S?

Looks smaller to me. Haven't done a lot of research yet, but think the difference in mint mark size stems from at least two different punches used this year. Location of the mint marks can vary as they were hand punch on the dies. Thanks, Doug.

That's the Small S.

The easiest thing to do is get a 1940-S nickel and compare the mint mark as they all have the same size "S" as the early 1941-S nickels... the ones struck very late in 1941 have the new punch (large "S")...

I've found a lot of 1941-S nickels over the years, and have around a dozen of the Large S variety.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Halo1st said it... 1st, concerning the location.

In this case (and every other mintmark before 1990) they are hand-punched and vary so the location is not important in determining whether it's small or large. The comparison is only of the MM itself. Yours is a small S.

coop's comparison shows a clear difference in size and design between the two.

Thank you everyone! Now I can see the difference in the size of the mm. Thank you for pointing this out to me.
