US One Cent Steel Penny Question? - Coin Community Forum

ccnz Valued Member New Zealand 54 Posts	Posted 05/05/2017 11:35 pm Hi, I have a question about a 1943 steel penny one cent coin I was looking at. What causes the red part on the coin in the photo below. Is it rust? In the photo below, I noticed a red part on lincons cheek, so I looked at the red part with a 40x and 60x coin loupe magnifier and it has the initials r s on the cheek of lincon's face. You can't see th r s very well in the below photo - hard to get a digital photo that will zoom in and stay in focus at that detail. Is the r s initial normal? Chase007 Pillar of the Community United States 7509 Posts	Posted 05/06/2017 10:25 am Your first clue= there were no letter 'r' (lower case) used by Mint on Pennies.as stated above ,most likely zinc rot formation,perhaps you can post a clear pic. the one above is out of focus! T-BOP Rest in Peace United States 18456 Posts	Posted 05/06/2017 4:25 pm There is no zinc rot on a 1943 steel cent. In that spot on reverse the zinc coating has worn down exposing the steel which is now rust . Report this Post to the Staff

ccnz Valued Member New Zealand 54 Posts	Posted 05/06/2017 7:46 pm The r and s initials is definitely there. I was only able to see it using a loupe magnifier. The only reason I was looking was looking at the cheek part was to look at the red spot on lincons cheek - to see what is was. It was then that I saw the r s in small letters. There really small, not sure how someone would put small letters like that on a coin. My digital camera only zooms in to 16x so I don't think that camera is going to get a clear photo of the r s without blurring. May try again tonight. ccnz Valued Member New Zealand 54 Posts	Posted 05/07/2017 04:07 am ok I had a look at the coin again after I gave it a good wipe with a cloth. I'm pretty sure it is due to PMD. There are small pits in the coin and the rust formed in the pits of the coin, which was shaped in the letters r and s on the coin. So PMD and rust is it - thanks for all you help.
