A precedent for a numismatic commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth existed in the Lincoln Cent, which had been introduced in 1909 to observe the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The Washington quarter was introduced as a one-year commemorative, but it proved so popular with the public that, following a one-year lapse in mintage, it was decided in 1934 to continue the coin as a regular issue. The conversion to presidential portraiture on our circulating coinage continued in 1938 with the introduction of the Jefferson nickel and in 1946 with the introduction of the Roosevelt dime, being concluded in 1964 with the Kennedy half supplanting the Franklin half introduced in 1948.

I would argue that the Franklin half, being in the same style and spirit as the Kennedy, "counts" as closer to a presidential coin rather than a classic, ie lady liberty. Therefore, the transition became complete in 1948, and the 1964 move to Kennedy was done more to sooth a mourning nation rather than to bring the half into modern coin standards.

The humble man that he was (Turning down being made a king of the new land? How unlike modern politicians!), Washington likely would not have wanted to be on the quarter or dollar bill. But his importance to this nation has superseded his personal wishes.

Can you imagine what our quarter today would look like if they were not popular in 1932.

The Washington quarter was originally planned as a 1 year commemorative type coin, but circulating so the largest # of people could honor the father of our country.

From the editorial page in the July 1931 Needlecraft, the Magazine of Home Arts published in Augusta, Maine.

All quarter dollar coins in 1932 will be official George Washington Memorial coins, bearing a profile portrait relief on one side.
