I purchased the following token and it was in a 2 x 2...

It was labelled as a medium 0.... I took it home, took it out of it's existing 2x2 and noticed the engrailed edge.

I'm still convinced this is a medium 0 but only the small 0 has an engrailed edge.

The easiest explanation is that the previous owner and I have made a simple mistake attributing the variety...

But in all honesty I still need a bit of convincing as the size and shape look like a medium 0 to me.

Would also like your thoughts on grade.

Thank you in advance!

I always find that the best way to determine small vs big is to have both in front of you.
I have two of those with distinctly different size o's. Yours is definitely not the small o I couldnt say if there is a large o but seems to be the medium.
Now about rims, the rim you show exactly matches the medium o rim that I have. The small o has a reeded edge slanted but not the train track rim that the medium o has.
In any event I am no expert on these, I just happened to have both examples handy to look at. If anyone else has better info to share I am sure they know better

Medium. Large "0" will sit slightly below the bottom of the "4".

Then help me out with this... as I'm confused... does this coin not have an engrailed edge?

Aren't the only coins that exhibit and engrailed edge small "0's"?

I don't know where you are getting tbat info from, but I do see how one COULD read that from theb listing on Numista.com for this issue. It does only mention engrailed for the small 0 but I think there intention is that only the small 0 has the option of being either engrailed or plain. The med and large are always engrailed. That's how I understood it.
That along with the fact that I have the medium and it is indeed engrailed, I think the answer is that you have the medium and your is supposed or be (and is) engrailed.

It seems the large and medium are engrailed and the small can be plain or engrailed. Here are the three sizes;

I'd say a very nice EF-45. I'd give that one a rub with a t-shirt just to get some of the dirt off, and it may look like an AU with the bit of shine it will give it.
