Could you please let me know what is the black spot on the reverse of this 1931-s Lincoln Cent.
Give me your opinion on it's Grade and Value !

Looks like some kind of corrosion starting.

Usually a black residue is organic in nature. However, the terminal stage of verdigris is also black cupric oxide.

It doesn't matter, you would not want to remove this residue or you'll likely have a big spot of discoloration on the reverse.

Agree. Grade appears to be VF-30 or so.

whats strange is that the black does not cross over the lettering. very weird if it was something like a burn mark from an acid. I'm not an expert but I'm thinking this could have been a defective planchet that slipped through as it looks like the strike occurred after it was already there.

Well-reasoned and interesting. In any case, it really kills the value. I'd say around $40 tops.

VF-25. Not a big fan of the dirt or of the obverse scratches... Lower appeal.
