Hi oleg and

I would have said a British VF, with great hairlines and little wear, but the shine on the portrait and lion worries me: it looks as if it has been cleaned, and the 'dirt' around the lettering perhaps may represent the original toning. But my main concern is the edge milling: it looks very faint, as if it has been planed off so as to fit the coin in a bezel or jewellery mount.

heh. thanks, NumisRob. and is it possible the the milling around the edge is just from age and use?

Very unlikely. The milling is usually still pretty clear on coins in VG to F condition and should still be nice and sharp on one with as little circulation as this.
