I found this one today along with a couple 86s that are just as nice as this one. The only things I see wrong with the penny is a small dot (obverse) and a small scratch (reverse). What do you guys think?

No where near excellent condition, sorry. The die has severe die abrasion scratches all over it. The other two marks are just damage.

I wasn't aware that die scratches would affect the grade. That's good to know. So for future reference even if the coin isn't damaged the die scratches and abrasions will affect the grade and to look for coins without die scratches?

It's not a bad coin for being from the 80's they usually are not that well struck, but keep looking for a better one..

Die polish lines DO NOT affect the grade but they have the potential to effect the eye appeal to some. I suggest you (and everyone else) send a few hours on the PCGS website. There are thousands of images to learn from, especially useful are the completed auction results from ha.com (a great learning site in itself).

This looks to be a nice example but the reverse doesn't have a lot of eye appeal. STATES OF is a bit weak too.

65/66RD depending on how it looks in hand.
