Hello Everyone,

I've collected coins for several years but think I have now also caught the bank note bug.. happy to see there is a forum sub for this subject as well.. my first question is on this $2 note .. it appears that the federal reserve stamp and the number "12" in each corner had way too much ink applied .. now under further evaluation it looks as if the design elements on the reverse are also much darker in comparison to a another note of the same year and bank.. there are what appears to be lines of perhaps "smears" of excess ink on both the obverse and the reverse.. Is this a common error? Is it worth collecting? Also if anyone has a link to information on what would be considered a collectible serial number.. such as how low is desireable and pairs of numbers in a serial number.. is 6 pairs considered collectible.. I know that serials 1000 and under are ultra collectible but where is the entry point for low/high serial numbers? 35000? Thank you in advance for all opinions and assistance.. I greatly appreciate it..

Not an expert, but I believe that those lines could be dirt or machine oil from a counting machine. It could have happened at the BEP. While it makes the note less than perfect, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that being sold as an error.

As for the amount of ink on the stamp and the 12 -- again, I don't have any BEP printing experience, but I know that for newspaper ink, sometimes the ink is just thick. Once my husband and I drove about six hours to point this out to someone who insisted the pump wasn't working.

When I started searching notes, I set notes like these aside and it wasn't long before I had filled a shoe box. I think it isn't normal or optimal, but it isn't uncommon.

Ok I will hold on to it.. lol.. see if I can fill up a box... saving money never hurt anyone.. I have two more notes I found today that I could use an opinion on.. I believe the $20 would be a double mini radar? Thought the $100 was cool with the pairs of numbers and letters ..

Kind of true. Though if you stuff that $120 under your mattress, inflation is hurting you. You'd be better off converting it into a 401(k) or some kind of collectible that is going to appreciate. As that sits, it's $120 with no potential to be anything more than $120, so as the years go on, it's worth less and less.

Of course YMMV, there's no guarantee that any investment is going to have a return.

Yeah, that shoe box didn't take long to fill and it took even less time to put that cash back in the bank.

This link was shared with me a while back so I thought it would be appropriate to pass on the information.http://coolserialnumbers.com/FancyS...Numbers.aspx
this next page is pretty cool, it does not tell which numbers are collectible but is does show a percentage of "coolness". Its just a fun page to get a coolness factor on a particular 8 digit number.http://www.coolnumbers.com/crunch.a...34652&type=1
