Here's another raw $10 gold piece from the dealers "on sale" tray. I think this one is a nice AU-55 with better-than-average surfaces. There is even a hint of proof-like reflectivity on the reverse. I made my final decision to purchase when I learned the mintage was a paltry 49,000 pieces.

Any comments/opinions?

Are you sure it's authentic? I'd compare the reverse to some other examples online.

J_h_s,

Well, I'm as sure as I can be without having it slabbed. I compared the reverse to certified reference examples on the Heritage site and critical features like the size, shape, and location of the mintmark match up perfectly. I also checked the weight. The weight standard for the Liberty $10 gold piece is 16.718 grams. My 1895-S weighs in at 16.697 grams which would be well within tolerance.

Is there something about this coin that strikes you as questionable?

As I recall, I found the entire alignment of the eagle respective to the lettering a little different than another image I looked at on line. That doesn't make me astute or right.
