I thought I'd post this here to show what can turn up in a dealers bargain box...so it can never hurt to look.
I got this for $3.50, which is below silver content value--not bad at all since it's a 53 NSF LD.

I've sent this off to a friend as part of a trade

nice find. that is a compelling coin - it has great eye appeal - that reverse is killer.

Thanks...for all the wear it actually has few larger marks. I had to save this from melting.
My macro lens also tends to pick up surface detail (scratches) over surface reflectivity.

Great job! I've found many such bargins at US coin shows. Lots of foreign silver coins in bins marked "50% off all foreign!"

The coin arrived today. It looks much better than the picture depicts! What does this coin grade as?

Thanks David for your feedback. Nice to read confirmation on what I've said about my camera/lighting setup: it resolves surface details and downgrades luster and other positives. By the photo alone, one might conclude this coin is "whizzed", but that's what happens when you combine a very capable macro lens, small aperture (f11), and single-source lighting.

As this coin shows, it's problematic to grade from photos alone. And, it's particularly difficult to grade the NSF coins because the hair/laureate details are often struck weakly: NSF was a high-profile design that was reworked later as "SF" with better hair detail and lower relief. Therefore, I could give a grade that may easily not "agree" with the photo above, and put my judgment into question here. But you already have a good idea of the standards I use--make your own call now that you have the coin.

Steve, the one pictured above was part of a trade, and the higher-grade one I'm keeping.
But, if another decent coin turns up at a show, I'll be sure to get it and you'll have first chance, unless you find one sooner!
