Having read some of the history on Valens I have wanted to get a coin of his. I was watching this for the last several days and then won the auction today. I usually do not have to up my bid too many times in a this auction, but I did to get this one.

It is a scarce coin. There is one example in the CNG archives, and a total of 3 on acsearch including the CNG example.

Oh well, that is another historical figure off the list. It is not a problem free coin, but it is still attractive imho.

Valens, 364-378 Solidus Nicomedia circa 364-367, AV 20.5mm., 3.93g. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev. Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum and Victory on globe. In exergue, SMNS. RIC 2b. Dep. 13/2.

Andrew, what a great pickup. Despite the graffiti it's a wonderful and impressive coin. Well done!

I am not sure when the graffiti was added. I do not think it affect the overall look of the coin very much. At least not for me.

Thanks for the kind comments.
