This was one of the Morgan's I grabbed from grandpas collection when I put the rest into his safe deposit box... I grabbed it because of its high level of detail... whatcha think?

PS... I put roughly 600+ Morgan's and Peace dollars of misc dates into his deposit box...

Probably AU, but it is polished. Sorry, but a very small premium for this coin.

Whizzed was my first thought. (Maybe polished is the same thing? I'm not so great with the technical terms.) Notice how the fields are more reflective than the areas immediately adjacent to the stars that the polisher wasn't able to get into.

If the coin had an original luster, then it would command high premium. Any cleaned or polished coins are considered less valuable since collectors do not like them. You might have much more valuable coins in your grandpa's collection, although not as shiny as this one.

Very true... I didn't know then what I'm starting to know now... lol. I did grab it for it's 'shiney' appeal...

Quite a few of the others were unclean, drab, dirty, and then there were many that had a rainbowish toning to them... lots of Peace dollars too...

Someday I hope to get my hands on them again... just to catalog and price out what was there...

If I estimate that I could get a minimum of $18 a coin... I figure there's $10,000 to $12,000 there in value... not to mention premiums...

I was the only one who could lift the box back up into place after I filled it to the brim... and it was up on the second to last row on top! Lol. There was only 1 size larger in the safe deposit box sizes...

Wouldn't a polish job do more to take away the detail of the strike? Or create swirls in the flat fields?

Please forgive my ignorance on the process... I'm pretty new to all the details of coin appraising, collecting, and searching.

Are you the guy with the CC Morgans you got from your grandfather? The 1883 has a lot of marks and abrasions on it. It still has detail but as stated it was polished or harshly cleaned. That does kill the value for most coins, but many, many coins have been cleaned. If your coins have the rainbow tone don't touch them. Many collectors love that sort of tone.

I'm the guy who helped grandma clean up after grandpa passed recently... I scoured his basement and room to find his collections and store them properly... his silver dollars were too valuable to keep where he had them so I put them in their safety deposit box for now...

Then I found his coin accumulation of pocket change and I'm sorting through those right now... wanting to look for rarities and errors etc... his true collection was either hidden too deeply for me to find, or he cashed em in at some point for home repairs etc... what I've got is lots of pocket change that has the pre 1964's mostly removed... but there's still a lot to go through... so I post finds as I come across them and ask for advice.

The Morgan's are in Minnesota and I'm in Washington state... so, sorting those will come at a much later time... the family that made it back for his passing and funeral just watched grabbed one morgan as a keepsake... the rest got stored in the box...

Whatever was done to it (plating?), your coin has an unnatural look. Good luck on your searching!

AU details, polished. Depending on how the polishing is done,it may not leave marks that are obvious to the naked eye but the unnaturally shiny surfaces are a dead giveaway.
