I picked this up for $140 and when I got home I looked at it under x4 on the digital mic. I about crapped myself! Anyways...I am curious as to if it is an early die state or mid. The right broken wingtip is a lot stronger on the coin I purchased then the mid die state example I saw in the RedBook for Flying Eagles and Indian Heads. I hope the images are clear enough...I took the best picture of the weak "7" underdate as I could, but the partial punched "1" between the Eagle and the date should insure it is this RPD. Looks like an RPD, but it's not EDS. The letters are too soft on the outer edge for EDS.

Oh...my! A dealer let that one go?! I'm certain that's a Snow-1. You posted some very nice pics--certainly more detail than Rick Snow's FE/IHC RedBook in terms of die state determination. A couple of things--at first glance, there does seem to be good definition in the markers, particularly the corner of the 7. In a LDS, that gets reduced to a few mushy raised dots. Maybe this is MDS? There must be a range, and this is nearer EDS than LDS. The marker from the 1 punch has too defined a shape for LDS. Could you post a pic of the whole obverse? (What is the grade?) And, with your permission I'll post this at Rick Snow's forum...hopefully he'll comment as to die state. Btw, here's a resource Rick Snow put up on die states for this variety. In summary...WOW!

Yes. Please do send it to Mr. Snow. I cannot get the whole field of the coin on my digital camera on my stereo microscope so Ill post 4 pics of the obverse later tonight.
Thanks for you time and respected opinions

It is a Snow-1 No doubt. The surface looks hairlined as if it were cleaned at some point in it's life. That's not a complaint as it is a fantastic find. It is just something to take into consideration when trying to value the coin.
As to die state, probably mid die state as the date and lettering aren't as rounded (as coppercoins says, soft) on EDS coins of this type.
It is a great find and probably a $500.00 coin or better:-)
If you can post pictures of the 4 quadrants of the coin, I may be able to use one of my photo programs to combine the images. So try to take as much in each shot as you can.
Nice!
Bill

Thanks Kurt. thats very nice of you. Foundinrolls...I didn't get the pictures yet. I was playing with Carlisle's Collector's Assistant when I got home from work. I am not that impressed with this software. Anyone use it? Have any suggestions for a good quality program for cataloging and the like for collectors?... ...anyways. I will try and get those pics in the late AM. I'm bushed and need to crash before I get W E R T Y imprinted on my forehead. John Booth

John, I just heard back from Rick Snow, who said it "Looks fairly early die state." Not entirely specific, but then he suggested his FE attribution guide for more info. I don't have the book, so I can only guess the markers are clearly noted there.

John: Nice cherrypick. it does look like a MDS to my eye. The tip of the 7 should be a little clearer for an EDS.
