Really unfortunate strike/die state, but wanted to see what you guys thought the grade might be.

It looks to me like it was mechanically polished down at the high points rather than a weak strike. The high points of the reverse include the top of the right wing on the eagle and that is fully struck. For that reason, I think that this is not a weak strike. On the obverse, the outstretched hand is really well struck. It shouldn't be that strong on a weakly struck obverse. Seems more likely that there was some unattractive toning on some of the high points and someone tried to polish those away and got carried away.

Hmmm, that'd be a bummer. Anything's possible I guess. I assumed it was a typical strike problem. Hand/Branch/Reverse feathers etc.

AU details. The luster is strongly indicative of dipped coins.

At the first site, a dull patina popped out. I second dipped coin with AU details. Would probably been nicer without doing anything.

Coming to a sad realization that after all this time I can't pick up cleaned coins if it shows luster in hand.

These are old sellers pics of the coin. Do they help confirm it was dipped/cleaned?

I agree that it was likely dipped due to subdued luster, but I'm not sure I buy that the obverse center was polished.

Doesn't appear dipped to me. Really hard to judge wear on a flat strike from pics. Could even be Unc.

Can't tell from the seller's low resolution pictures in 2x2. I would have bought it if the price was right. What was the seller description?

Honestly couldn't tell you. The images were saved in 2012, so that's how long ago it's been...
