I am new in the forum. I have a 1964 silver dime had some interesting line on both sides. Are they call die break? Is it common? What is the value?

Hi and welcome.

The obverse seems to show the result of a die crack or a slight gouge in the die between the foot of the R and Roosevelt's head. The line through the letters starting at the R appears to be a slight line of damage as the line looks to be sunken into the details and not raised.

If it is the small lines that you are asking about on the reverse, they are the result of metal flow on a coin that has been struck by a fairly, well worn die.

What is on the obverse is a fairly common occurrence. What is on the reverse is extremely common and can be seen literally on billions of coins struck.

Thanks,
Bill

Thank you Bill, You are right the line across the R is a damage mark. Is it common happening at both side?

Thanks again.

Hi,

The die gouge is less common, but is encountered fairly frequently. I didn't see evidence of a gouge on the reverse. I might have missed something but I only saw the results of the die being worn on the reverse and that is extremely common.

If I missed something on the back of the coin, let me know. I'll check this thread again later to see.

Thanks,
Bill
