I messaged Dan about one coin then two he had on
ebay. He was polite and replied answering my questions and then told me to go ahead and buy one coin and if I did not like it just return it and I told him I hate to do that so if I decide to buy 1 or both of the coins I would tell him.
Next day the auctions were removed for an "error" in the listing. No big deal and I asked him what the error was and if he would relist it or was there something actually wrong with the coin.
At this point I get nearly nonsensical answers. They would be filled with spelling errors and almost appeared to be spoken in broken English. The messages almost all said the same thing:
"We reserve the right to sell".
What? I mean it was like I was getting auto-replies written by somebody in Nigeria. I could not understand what was going on. I thought maybe his account was hacked. I have his email from years past so I emailed him and asked what was going on.
So I asked again just asking was he going to relist it and should I watch for it then or what. Simple question: is the coin going to be relisted. He kept giving me the same auto-reply, broken English messages about his right to sell. It was though he was answering a question nobody was asking. I again asked if the coin he offered to me was no longer for sale (no big deal) or if he was going to relist it. He said he can list what or when he wants....ok again that was never in dispute. It was though if I asked you if you were coming to my house for Sunday dinner and you kept answering "I have the right to eat where I want." Ok yeah.....but not what I asked. It was also strange is he was almost hostile all the sudden.
At first he did not make the connection that I was the eBayer but I gave him a call, left a voicemail, and just said call me back whenever. He emailed me back asking why I Was calling him.
Huh? Why is a coin collector calling a dealer asking about coins? He then demanded I email him asking what coin or coins I was interested in. I told him about the coins in question but again he moves a lot of coins so could be others. He then sent me a random email that read and I am copy-pasting:
"We see You have a Really Nice Silver Hardware Website.. Not interested in any Sales Cals Regards dan"
I am not in hardware at all. My name, email address, or phone number show no connection anywhere saying as such and I have no idea where he got that from. He never brought that up again.
At this point I as at a total loss. If I am being blunt it was as though I was speaking to somebody who was suffering from some sort of psychosis.
I called him again and said hi and said this is the me from the emails and whatnot.
He immediately began an almost drunken rambling saying he does not sell outside
ebay. I said ok I never even hinted at doing as such. He then proceeded to say "I am not selling that coin it is firm!"
I asked "Dan what coin are you talking about? I contacted you about 2 originally and you have many others and I watch you new listings."
He now was screaming about how he will not sell and whatnot.
I cannot explain what is going on. It is like in his mind there is some much more complicated and large conversation going on that I am not in anywhere part of. It is almost hard to accurately describe the experience because his messages and emails are just so nonsensical.
