Poll Question
Title says it all. Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I didn't see another one.
Gary AdkinsMy name is Gary Adkins, and I have been active in numismat- ics and the
ANA for 50+ years.
I am seeking the office of president of the
ANA and hope to bring my time, talent and skills to the organization. I will do my best to build on and preserve the
ANA legacy that has provided leadership of the numismatic community since 1891. This is no light task. I accept this chal- lenge with great anticipation and dedication, hoping to leave this organization better than I found it after serving on the Board four years, vice president two years, and hopefully as your next president.
There are many challenges facing the
ANA, and I am ready to take them on. This is a very large nonprofit coin club, but make no mistake, it is also a business with an annual budget of
$5 million. The operations and management are extremely important, and no single person could possibly be tasked with managing it all. It takes a team effort of highly qualified indi- viduals to orchestrate the complex array of issues that are part of any large organization.
With the combined experiences of some
very talented people, the
ANA is headed for a brighter future. That future can be insured if everyone joins in the effort. I refer to the great director and staff, the Board which provides strategic guidance, and, most importantly, those of you who are the real strength of the organization—the membership! I believe that we must focus greater attention to insure a pleasurable and valuable experience for our members. I am convinced this starts at the local and regional club levels, where the heart of building a stronger membership begins. I will support that effort enthusiastically as the next president of the
ANA.
I can assure you that I am committed to the hard work necessary to secure the future and all the promise it holds for the thousands of great members, the volunteers and all those who continue to support this wonderful organi- zation. I treasure your friendship and appreci- ate your support.
Mike EllisProfessional authenticator, grader and variety attributor. I am also a longtime author,
educator and volunteer. Having started collect- ing in 1968, I never really left the numismatic community. After serving seven years in the United States Navy, I chose to become a coin professional. Most of this time, I have done more of everything other than dealing coins, though I sure have looked at plenty, a necessity to learn as much as possible!
I have served as president of the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America (CONECA) several terms and two terms on the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors. I have also taught at the
ANA's Summer Seminar since 1996 and have received every award CONECA has to offer, in- cluding induction into its Hall of Fame. I have also received the
ANA's Glenn Smedley Memo- rial Award and the Presidential Award from Clifford Mishler for service to the
ANA.
So here is what I do today, in addition to most of that shown above. I still provide per- sonal authentication, coin grading and numis- matic attribution services of all kinds and am the general editor of the Cherrypickers' Guide
to Rare Die Varieties of
United States coins. Besides
CherryPickers' Guide coins, I attribute about as much as anyone else, including almost everything except ancient coinage. It has been and still is my desire to share my knowledge with all the membership of the
ANA. To see that is done properly, I feel leading the Board of Governors will go a long way in fulfilling that endeavor. We must get back to full concentra- tion of our congressionally mandated mission to educate, including working much harder to protect numismatic consumers!
This is but a little about me. To learn about what I think is necessary to lead the Associa- tion and protect it from potential harm, includ- ing the loss of our Congressional Charter and our not-for-profit 501(c)3 status, closely read what I have to say in this June issue and in the material accompanying the ballot.
It is with a humble soul that I ask you to choose me to lead you into the future.
