Hi all, One of the things that first attracted me to coins as a kid was the feel of heavy old coins in my hand: holding them, flipping them around, and exploring the different textures of fine detailed bumps and well-worn smoothness. Since I began collecting a couple of months ago, I have read countless articles that warn against doing exactly that. The general consensus seems to be that the only way to handle raw coins is by the edges, or even -- in the case of high-grade or especially rare coins -- wearing light cotton gloves. Now, I understand the reason for such cautions, especially with MS coins where an errant fingerprint could reduce the grade and lower value, sometimes considerably so. That makes sense to me. But I haven't heard any advice for whether such handling is also necessary for well-worn old coins, specifically those which have seen better days and could only vaguely recall what it felt like to be a XF-40 in decades past. Now, consider this: a soft cloth laid on a flat surface, just-washed hands, and a VF-20 Standing Liberty or Barber quarter. My question is: could holding the coin in the palm of the hand cause any impactful damage to the coin, such that it would affect the condition or grade? If yes, can you please explain? Thanks! Michelle

VF coins have been through thousands of hands already. You won't do any damage to them in the palm of your hand.

That was exactly my thinking, but I thought it best to validate it with more experienced collectors. Thank you, basebal21! :)

Michelle , I don't worry too much when I handle well worn coins ,but even then, I try to hold them by the rims . Probably the only way you can ruin them is by holding them between 2 pieces of sandpaper .

Unless you have a key date or extreme rarity, you probably won't do too much damage to a VF20 coin.

Hi and . . If it's your old circulated coin your handling, it's not an issue. If you examining someone else's coin, say at a show or dealer, handling only by the edges is proper etiquette . .

Yes, it's fine with coins that sell around melt value. I have a cookie tin with about $200 or so of loose 90% silver change and it's fun to run my hands through it from time to time and play Scrooge McDuck! But I agree....when handling others coins or talking with a dealer just hold by the rims.

@uffmic, sorry for hijacking your thread a little bit in the past few minutes, but my intent was all in good fun. I agree with the others that with clean hands and over a soft surface, handling VF silver coins should be fine. This is one of the reasons that I have mostly shifted from collecting US coins to coins of the medieval period or older.
