Recently found a $1 August Bechtler Carolina Gold Coin 27.g/21.c I was wondering if you guys can spread some light on the coin I recently found. How rare is this coin? I know that a hole in a coin is considered damaged and value is greatly appreciated... but what would you consider the value of this gold coin? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Private issue gold from Georgia and Carolina are generally more rare than the already rare Dahlonega and Charlotte Mint issues. In particular, the Bechtlers and Templeton Reids are rare and desirable. I would try to consult a specialist in this type of coinage. Nice find.

@jm13, rare indeed. This appears to be the first post at CCF on this subject. The hole is a problem, but for someone who has been looking for this piece for a long time, it may not be a huge problem. Be sure to follow up with us when you get it authenticated!

We settle out estates. It came in with a few other civil war coins and trade coins. The family stated that they had veterans from wwI and ww2 and previous others... basically a military family.
