So I'm venturing back into the wild world of raw coins. After a 30 year absence. I just picked up some raw bust halves. Was trying to decide which grading service to send them into and noticed that ANA members get a free NGC membership.

I guess my question is, if I'm going to be buying more raw coins and sending them in for grading, would buying an ANA save me the most money on grading fees?

I think it would depend on the value and number of the coins, the reason for certification, and the value you place on other benefits of ANA membership. Both the NGC premium and PCGS platinum basically pay for itself since they include a voucher to be used towards grading fees. The PCGS voucher is good for 8 coins valued up to $3000 but if you don't submit 8 coins and/or any of the coins are valued $300 or less, you will not enjoy the full savings of the voucher. The NGC voucher is just a $150 credit towards grading fees but if you don't submit enough coins then you may not enjoy the full benefit. With the ANA membership, you have to pay for the membership fee and then the grading fees on top. If you don't care about any other benefits the ANA provides, then this route could cost even more money. Then you have to consider the reason for certification. If all you want is authentication, ANACS may be the cheapest. If your goal is to resell, then PCGS followed by NGC will be better choices despite higher costs. Finally, you might want to consider submitting through an authorized dealer. By piggybacking on their submissions, you can save money on shipping costs and maybe grading fees. This question is difficult to answer without knowing the coins you want to submit, the intention of certification, and if you plan to get anything else out of your ANA membership.

ANA membership will not save you money over buying the $149 NGC submittal package as you get $150 in credit to use for submitting coins. If you buy the ANA membership, you will still have to pay full price for grading fees. I am a member at ANA and it does have other perks with CAC, coin insurance, online magazine, webb site access and supporting the hobby.

Join the ANA because you want to support the hobby; any side benefits that you might receive is just gravy.

Yes

If you are a numismatist, you need access to the library.

There are perks from joining the ANA but IMO the best is being able to insure your collection with Hugh Wood.
I don't know of any other insurance group which is that inexpensive.
Check your homeowner's policy vs. Hugh Wood and you'll see what I mean.

I joined the ANA just to be able to get Hugh Woods to insure my collection. There is also a nifty credit card. Not sure if there is anything else I value much.

We should all support the ANA. It costs next to nothing and stokes the hobby's fires.
