I have had a look at this auction site http://www.oztion.com.au/ and would be interested in what others think about it -buyer or seller viewpoint.

My main impression so far are;
  • Starting prices generally much higher than ebay
  • Very high proportion of Buy it Now listings
  • Very low sales rate, relative to listings
  • Plenty of long time ebay sellers recently started there
  • Much poorer descriptions generally than on ebay
  • Not many sellers taking advantage of better photo facilities (compared to ebay)

I would put most of these things down to the free listing and fees only applying on sale. No real incentive to get a quick sale (certainly discourages low starting price and risk of only one bid) and just keep relisting until sold.

I would love to hear comments from anyone else who has had a look or, better still, tried it already. (Bigfella -I am sure you must have checked it out)

thanks
Jeff

PS. My comments do not apply just to coins although they are one of the two main things we were looking at (+ Jenny for Royal Albert china).

I checked it out and so far I see no advantages, unless it grows bigger.
I am not impressed with the way the listings for coins are posted.
Nor with the prices. some Items I checked I can buy directly from a dealer at a lower price.

But I will bookmark it and check in occasionally to see if there are coins of value there.

Personally I have had rather reasonable luck with Australian coins and banknotes on that big auction site.

Sites with no listing fees have a very difficult time surviving.

Go to a bar that has 50˘ drafts and look around you. Then go to a bar that has $2.50 drafts and look around you. Nuff said.

I have been a member of Oztion for sometime now. I have bought some very good coins there, but always through buy it now. Doesn't seem to be enough traffic to support auctions. And admittedly most of the sellers I have bought from sell on e-bay as well, they just seem to list better coins at closer to market price on Oztion. I guess because there are no listing fees, they can just keep rolling over the listing in the hope someone buys.

I haven't used Oztion yet, but will be checking it regularly from now on as sellers transfer over to it. I'm sure some features could be improved on, but will wait & see how any new purchases work out when I find something there I want.

I've just blown my next month's coin budget at the RAM, so any other purchases are on the back burner for now.

Where do I find either of these bars? Won't slake my thirst that cheap around here!

I have 15 buys on Oztion. Got some mint sets cheaper than ebay. Got some other coin sets cheaper than ebay. A friend of mine got some coins tonight - again cheaper than ebay. Yes some of the BIN items are priced silly. Most BIN items on ebay are silly too.

Having a ball and going broke buying lots of goodies on Oztion at the moment. Couldn't care less now what ebay did.

I have set up a little comparison test. Probably not very scientific but it will be interesting to see how it goes.

I have just listed several items on OZtion that are the same (or nearly so) as current or recent ebay listings. I will keep a record of how things go and see what the difference is in overall results.

Here are two of the listings (and you can easily go to the others from there, if you want to check them out);
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...SE:IT&ih=015
http://www.oztion.com.au/buy/auctio...emid=4086329

Any constructive criticism of the listings is invited.

cheers
Jeff

PS. Two interersting things I noticed in this exercise;
  • I had watchers on scheduled items before they actually started -OZtion shows your scheduled items as if they were current listings.
  • If watchers don't hide their user names in OZtion then you can send them a message! If that isn't an invitation to invite direct sale -bypassing the auction- then I don't know what would be.
