Hey all! This is my first post over here and I'm excited that it's about something as interesting (hopefully) as these coins that I received as a gift. I have taken photos of all 15 of them, front and then back. Any information along with potential value (just out of curiosity, I won't be selling them) would be greatly appreciated!

Coins 1-5

Oh and I forgot to mention (although can't figure out how to edit my original post) that the first 10 coins have a similar front face design, while the last 5 were totally individual. Also none of these coins are magnet
Rest in Peace

Not an expert by any means, but what struck me is the holes. either jewelry use or first thought was Belly Dancer outfit coins. Seem to remember that from another post long gone by.

Thin Ottoman silver coins are commonly found with holes.
They were strung together to be used for adornment.

Ottoman coins were also used in Egypt at a time when they had strong political influence there.

Nice gift!

Those certainly do look Ottoman, though some may possibly be Egyptian—some of their coins look very similar. Now, it is hard for me to read the dates of most of these coins from those pictures, and the wear and holes definitely do not help. It might be easier to read them in-hand though, so I will try to teach you how to do that (assuming you do not already know).

It looks like the first coin posted is the easiest to read, so here is what you need to determine the dates (and this is the correct orientation):

Got-A-Bunch-Of-Ottoman-I-Think?-Coins-As-A-Gift,-Pics-Inside!-Please-Help

At the bottom there is the date, 1171, and at the top is the regnal year, 5. Otherwise saying, this coin was made in the fifth year of whoever's reign started in 1171 (Mustafa III). The year would be seen written as 1171/5, but that is in the Islamic calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, that would be around 1762. These coins, however, do not have the denominations written on them, so a diameter will be needed to determine whether it is 1, 5, or 10 para (15, 20, or 25 millimetres).

For figuring out the others' dates, here is the translation of the numbers:

So, if you can provide some diameters (and possibly the digits you can read), it would be easier for us to help determine what these are. I can tell at a quick glance that, from Coins 5-10, the bottom left is 1203/4 (1792), and the middle is probably 1203/10 (1798). Also, the bottom right one in the last picture looks like 1223/? (1820s to 1830s). But without the diameters, that is all I will be able to tell you about them.

These do appear to be genuine Ottoman silver coins, rather than imitations made specifically for use as jewellery. Nevertheless, they have been holed for jewellery purposes. That the coins are holed means they won't have much value to a collector; we prefer unholed coins. Because being holed was a common fate for these thin Ottoman coins, collectors are prepared to pay the big money only for unholed examples. They're not junk, but they're not super-valuable either. Maybe "double the bullion value"?

As for IDs, the ten similar ones in the first two pics all appear to be from the late 1600s or early 1700s. The five in the last set of pics are later, late 1700s or 1800s. On most of the coins, some of the detail of either the date or mintmark is missing (either worn away or obliterated by the hole) so a full proper ID may not be possible for many of them.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

The thing circled in that picture is located at the top of any of your posts, so click that if you would like to edit something.
