Firstly, I would like to thank Karen for sending me all those great Aus 20c coins. That's so nice of you...it's quite an interesting variety of designs!

In particular, this coin really caught my eye--the 2001 Australian Centenary coin filled with die chips in the lettering! Here in the US, errors like this have quite a following.

That's interesting, I didn't notice until you pointed it out. I have one ACT with chips and one without.

I wonder how common they are? Anyone else notice this?

Edit, I also have a couple of extra chunks of metal on the obverse
in "R" and "L" of Australia.

I posted this list in the Aussie forum in Aug 07, and I think I may have found found more errors since then but haven't updated the list.

Does anyone know of any errors on the CoF 50¢?

Learjet--your photos are interesting, because mine has the same chip between AT and many other corroborating details.
My obverse also has the same chip in the R, and shows traces of a break in the L. I think my coin is an earlier die state of the one you have.

Nancy, what a list! This one strikes me as similar to a few of yours...do you have any that connect AT in CELEBRATING?

It really strikes me just how badly they managed to do with so many errors in this series of coin, considering the low mintage of each design. I am thinking could it be possible they used a single die for each design, and the life of the die is not quite the 2,000,000 which was minted of each design.

orionnet, My understanding is that 1 die lasts roughly around 200,000 so it's probably unlikely that 1 die did all 2mil coins.

KurtS, Most likely this ACT one " Cud Between A&T Of Celebrating" is a connecting one you asked about.

Hmm, ok then I have not really read or know much about the actual minting process, but just had a look around and found a little on the mint site. It lists the following "On average each working die produces 250 000 coins but some dies produce over one million coins." now I would expect that 1 million would be a very rare case, but their would be considerable cost saving for them if they could use fewer dies per design. Not just cost savings on dies, but down time on the press, at 650 coins a minute taking just 15 minutes to change a die means 10,000 coins not pressed in that time.

Wow...that's some interesting info!
It would be fun to see a progression of chips on the ACT coins. And, given the prevalence of chips, we might determine how many reverse dies were used to strike this coin?
