In 2012, the Calgary Stampede, the annual rodeo and western culture show held in Calgary, Alberta marked the 100th anniversary of its first event.

Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M), celebrated the anniversary with a commemorative proof silver dollar featuring a design highlighting the Stampede's bareback bronc riding event. The design was created by Steve Hepburn.

Here's the commemorative silver dollar, with selective gold plating, that was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's (R C M) Fine Silver Proof Set for 2013; the GP version of the coin was not available individually, though unadorned proof and brilliant uncirculated silver examples could be purchased.

The Canadian Government sponsored the Canadian Arctic Expedition (CAE; 1913-18) to explore the expansive western Arctic region to learn more about its vast, frozen territory and to blunt potential exploration and claims over newly-discovered areas (islands) by the United States. The Expedition party consisted of 100+ people, including scientists from multiple disciplines and First Nations Iñupiat, Inuvialuit and Inuinnait who assisted as hunters and guides.

In the end, the CAE was a mix of success and failure. Seventeen men died during the expedition, one of its ships was lost and it cost more than 7X original estimates/budgets. But, it did effectively establish Canadian sovereignty over the territory, discover several new islands, help correct maps of the area, bring European goods and culture to a new people and collect thousands of scientific (geological, biological) samples and cultural artifacts to bring back and study.

The coin's commemorative reverse design, created by Bonnie Ross, is based on a photograph taken during the CAE. It presents a group of three men standing next to a dogsled, with its dog team standing at the ready. A large compass forms the artistic background for the scene.

The reverse design shows technological advances of Queen Victoria's lifetime: railways, shipping, the telephone and a Penny Farthing bicycle, with cogwheels illustrating the Industrial Revolution.

The coin's commemorative reverse design has an effective "then-and-now" theme with a canoe being paddled on Lake Ontario by a First Nations person (circa 1834) in the foreground and the modern (circa 1984) skyline of Toronto in the background. The coin was designed by D.J. Craig and engraved by Walter Ott.

The annual Convention of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association ( RCNA) was held in Toronto in 2018. As a souvenir of the event, the RCNA encapsulated 50 examples of the 1984 silver dollar - here's my example:

Here's a 1982 Netherlands silver 50 Guiden that was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of formal, friendly relations between the Netherlands and the United States. A gold version of the coin was also struck.

The reverse of the coin uses allegory/symbolism to represent the two countries: Lion (the Netherlands) and eagle (the United States). Simple but effective! (IMO)
