In 2002, as part of its commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, the Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) issued a Special Edition Proof Set that included a fully gold-plated silver dollar. The SD includes dual anniversary dates on its obverse and two views of the Queen as she rode in the Royal Gold State Coach during her coronation anniversary parade. The coin was available individually as an unadorned silver coin in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated; the gold-plated version was only available in the Special Edition Proof Set. At right, on the coin's commemorative reverse, is seen the Gold State Coach from a slight distance providing a glimpse of its full splendor - look closely and you can also see the Queen and Prince Philip seated inside! On the coin's left is depicted a close-up view of the Queen as she looks out a window of the Coach and smiles to a crowd of well wishers. 2002 Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee Gold-Plated Silver Dollar To learn more about the coin, check out: - 2002 Gold-Plated Silver Dollar for QEII Jubilee

The 1996 National Community Service silver dollar, struck by the US Mint, is definitely one of the more "classic" designs of the modern US series. Its obverse design is based on a rare award medal created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1905 for the Women's Auxiliary of the Massachusetts Civil Service Association. The central element of the design is a standing Lady Liberty holding a book topped with a lamp ("Lamp of Learning") in her right hand. The pairing is meant to symbolize learning and discovery. She uses her left hand to support an oval US Shield.

Here's an Uncirculated version of the 2004 US commemorative silver dollar that was issued in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of his light bulb. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Edison in his laboratory in Menlo Park, NJ; he is shown holding an early version of his light bulb. US Mint sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver is responsible for the design. The reverse, designed by then sculptor-engraver John Mercanti, depicts a circa 1879 Edison light bulb with rays of light emanating from it. The reverse also includes the anniversary dates "1879 - 2004." Note: On May 19, 2006, Mercanti was promoted to Chief Engraver of the US Mint, the 12th in the Mint's history.2004 Thomas Edison Silver Dollar To learn more about the coin, Edison and the US Mint's special Collector's Set for the coin, check out: - 2004 Thomas Alva Edison Collector's SetFor more of my posts about commemorative coins and medals, check out: Read More: Commems Collection.

Here's another silver dollar from the modern US commemorative series - it's the 2004 Lewis and Clark Expedition coin. It was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the exploration of the Louisiana Territory (and beyond!) by Captains William Lewis and Meriwether Clark from 1804 to 1806. On the obverse, Lewis is seen pointing into the distance and Clark is depicted holding his rifle. The reverse design includes a depiction of an example of the Indian Peace Medal that was carried by Lewis and Clark to give as a gift to Native American VIPs they encountered on their journey. The medal's "Peace and Friendship" design was also used on the reverse of the 2004 Westward Journey Peace Medal five-cent coin. In addition to an individual coin option, the US Mint also sold the L&C SD in a "Coinage and Currency Set."
