Agree G-04, but hard to imagine one with more wear and a legible date.

G-4. My question is how did the coin get so worn? I'm an old guy and never saw these coins circulating to any extent back in the day.

One can only speculate as to why this particular coin has sustained so much wear.

I would speculate it is a "pocket dollar" - carried by someone and taken out & rubbed between a finger & thumb. Repeatedly. The rims look like they have not seen nearly as much wear as the rest of the coin.
