It's not 73 struck over 72. It is a 73 struck over a Canadian coin. There is a faint image of King George through Washingtons head. Also on the reverse there is a date from the A-D in the word dollar if you look at it upside down. I have one myself. Dont know the value.

It is a normal, circulated quarter worth face value. to the CCF!

PamV, can we see the edge of your "struck over a Canadian coin". If it is real, it will show a solid color as all Canadian quarters that picture King George were made of silver. A normal US quarter from 1965 and onward will show copper nickel clad over a copper core, the normal "nickel/copper/nickel" sandwich obvious on all US dimes, quarters, and halves since 1965. The "famous" 1970-S struck on a Canadian Quarter is most likely a totally unique occurrence that was caused intentionally by a mint employee. The idea that a number of silver Canadian quarters somehow accidentally found their way into the US mint and were overstruck and released without anyone knowing is extremely unlikely. If you truly have one, it is worth a considerable amount of money, and I suggest you send it in to a grading company to have it authenticated. But as I said, there is no reason to believe that this was even possible without assistance from a mint employee. As for the original post, that coin just appears to have some damage and Die Deterioration. In order for it to be overstruck so that the 3 covers up the 2, you would have to assume that the coin went into the press at the exact correct orientation for it to line up perfectly with the rest of the coin. Again, extremely unlikely, it's even just a 50/50 chance for it to enter the press the right way up!

Just a point , all Canadian circulation coins after 1952 have Queen Elizabeth the second on the obverse, and the date is on the reverse around the 3 o clock area on 25 cents except for some commemorative issues
