I've got two $5 Liberties from APMEX and they both seem genuine to me. However do you think it's possible they occasionally unknowingly sell fakes?

They are pretty reputable but anything is possible. You're more likely to get a cleaned coin (passed off as original) than a fake though..

I can't see APMEX putting their reputation on the line by not making sure what they sell is genuine!

Agree anything is possible, but APMEX has a very strong reputation for quality and service, if not always for price.

You are good with authenticity ... not sure about condition ... so if you were hoping for high MS state then they are not going to assure you of that.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

You will probably pay up but I wouldn't sweat authenticity. No way they would harm their reputation doing something that stupid.

Just my opinion ... I would think APMEX would use very high end testing equipment to test any gold, coins that come in. They should have processes in place to authenticate coins. I think there would be a better chance of getting a fake coin on ebay. or even coin shows or local, con shops ... than APMEX.

Good stuff to hear. I like APMEX a lot and I'm glad I can sleep sound knowing my coins are probably genuine.

I have looked at a few raw Early Dollars on the APMEX site. I was more concerned about getting a raw Early Dollar with old cleaning that would not grade. With gold coins, I would buy only NGC/PCGS certified items. The price difference is small between certified and uncertified gold pieces on the APMEX site. And, I think certified coins will be will be easier to dump when the market rises. I think you can trust them either way though.

If you are going to buy from APMEX, that is perfectly OK, but don't hope to get lucky enough to score anything that is much over bullion value. They know to spot the more valuable coins above bullion value, and will sell them separately to already contracted buyers.

Quote: However do you think it's possible they occasionally unknowingly sell fakes? Sure, if they don't know a given coin is a fake, how could they stop themselves from selling it? If they don't know it is a fake then it follows that they think it is genuine. If they think it is genuine, they'll sell it as genuine. As would ANY other seller.

APMEX would test coins before selling IMO

APMEX would have enough size to have the best testing equipment, just to protect their own reputation.
