I found an ebay seller, that, is, um.. interesting. Along with very nice high grade US classics, he has some rather interesting art for sale. But along with the nice coins, I find this capped bust half that just plain does not look right. Are my eyes wonky or is this a counterfeit? Would you buy other coins from this guy?

It doesn't look right to me. My Bust Half book ends in 1836 so I don't have too many details about varieties but the upper curl near L looks too big and placed wrong as well as the lower curl near star 13. The stars look too pointy and some of the reverse lettering looks wrong. Just my opinion of course.

Fake. Among other subtle differences and the general tone/wear of the piece, the digits in the year are way off.

Compare to http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/6176 -- the center point of the 3 in the original is below the center of the 8.

The serifs on all of the S's on the reverse are also significantly different.

The coin is known as "Davignon Obverse 3/reverse C" in his book on Contemporary Counterfeit Capped Bust half dollars. It is also listed as #472 in the Riddell Book on counterfeits. Neat coin, common as contemporary counterfeits go.

A fake, but a contemporary one. NOT a modern one.

Is his other stuff OK? I wouldn't condemn him as a seller for getting one coin wrong. Communicate with him, and offer the excellent info shared here.

It's a contemporary counterfeit as jfransch has pointed out.

I found the seller on ebay, it appears he has several coins that to my eye appear to be contemporary counterfeits.

The 1861 3 cent silver 282505147628 reason: the top point of the star points to the E rather than the S. Could be wrong on this is a series I have little experience with

1837 half 282505236378 is another contemporary countefeit as the design imitates the lettered edge of 1836 and prior

This seller's 1833 is a contemporary counterfeit too I think.

282505229611

In my opinion: This is an uninformed seller that stumbled upon an estate full of coins and is selling them off.

Since Joe mentioned the 1833

The 1833 282505229611 appears to match this one for sale on Gerry Fortin's website. The 5 of the denomination especially

The picture below is of the ebay coin for future reference in case it gets zapped.
