No evidence of edge lettering. It weighs 13.5 grams. XRF shows 94.04 silver, 5.96 copper.

I tried to Overton it, but the pictures aren't clear enough.

Thanks TreasHunt. I bought this as a contemporary counterfeit. I've looked at the cc bust half site and didn't find anything that resembles this one.
I'm not into it for very much $. Just bought it as a curiosity.

I just checked the no-no site, and it did not come from there.
Do you have a weight by any chance?

scotty - what tipped you off that this was a counterfeit?

It was sold to me as one Coinfrog. I paid less than $40 for it if I remember correctly. It was an impulse buy. I tend to do that a lot.

IDK looks authentic to me. I'll take it if you no longer want it. Are you an impulse giver too?

scotty - I think we all buy on impulse every so often. Bust halves are hardly a specialty for me, but because this appears so genuine to my eye, I was just hoping for some insights as to why it might not be so.

I agree Coinfrog. The absence of any edge lettering is about the only thing I see wrong. Like you, I haven't learned enough about the series.
Is the 94% silver 6% copper ratio within tolerance?

I would have to wonder why someone would make a contemporary fake, and put more silver than a real one?

Sorry but this isn't true. You can have Capped Bust Half coins that never passed through the edge lettering machine. I recall seeing an Overton chart with the various edge lettering errors and the absence of lettering was one of them. If I recall correctly it was very rare. If that was the only diagnostic to indicate that this coin was a fake then I would look into it further.

If you can't match it to an Overton die pair, its fake. The odds of you discovering both a new die marriage at the same time as a mint error of missing the lettering machine is so small as to be impossible. Are you saying you can't match either obverse or reverse to known dies?
