In the past, we have discussed several methods for disposing of small change picked up in other countries that you don't wish to add to your own collection, including chucking them into the ocean, donating them to charity at the airport, and transferring them to your paypal account: http://goccf.com/t/276910http://goccf.com/t/288297http://goccf.com/t/269532 Well, here is a new one: leave a coin or two under the little carpet mat in the room safe. I was just in Zurich last week and found this Sheqel in that exact spot. THen I left a little present for the next person to look there! Quote: Only traveled overseas once @crazyb0, thanks for your service! I would like to point out though that US-based hotel also have these in-room safes. You don't need to travel to exotic destinations--the next time you find yourself in Tampa or Vegas or San Bernadino you can drop off a few LWCs!

Are you sure it was left there on purpose? I travel very much and I like numismatics very much, but I never heard of the idea... Is there an organization or so behind it, just like with those traveling books? Also, if you just change them to a new coin, then you're technically not disposing any coins, are you?

I usually take a handful at a time and scatter them in a few local parks where metal detectors frequent.

Quote: Are you sure it was left there on purpose? That is correct--I have no idea whether the previous person did this intentionally. However, it inspired me to take that step (and then tell you folks about it). I guess the concept is something like the Giddeons' ministry. Quote: I usually take a handful at a time and scatter them in a few local parks where metal detectors frequent. Yep, that is a good choice too. The dirt fishers love that I bet!

Quote: I guess the concept is something like the Giddeons' ministry. Being an atheist, I'd rather spread coins as a religion than bibles... Anyway, this wasn't the kind of book spreading I meant. There's an organization called 'roaming books' (when translated from Dutch), who put books on public places like train stations and on known pick up point. The thought is that books get an interesting life, instead of collecting dust on a shelf, and that it inspires people with unexpected stories, new perspectives, etc. The books can be recognized by the large sticker indicating that it's a roaming book and the rule is that you can read them, but you can't keep them. I actually expected that such initiatives would be found at more places worldwide.

There are some parks here with places for people to leave books for others to read, usually near a set of benches. I always thought that was cool.

Quote: 'roaming books' Interesting idea @ultrarant. I saw some stocked lending libraries on the side of the street in Portland Oregon a few weeks ago, but I am unaware of a similar nationwide program here in the US. In any case, yes you nailed it--this is the same as my concept of putting some coins under the little carpet in the hotel safe.
