So I went back to the ARC coin show in Independence MO this past Sunday. I was trying to get my mind around why I left empty handed (except for some circulated Mercury dimes)during the last show. This time I was more familiar with a few of the dealers. I was also armed with more knowledge of what coins sell for at auctions and so I was less reliant on my smart phone. Observations: -Seems that many of the dealers are focused on overpriced smaller ticked items. For example, the dealer that put on the show had 4 large tables filled with coins. On closer inspection, the majority of his coins were lower grade coins placed in 2x2s. His barber halve selection ranged from vg-vf and are the types of coins I can buy for $7 in bulk from the jewelry store. He had them marketed up to $15- $18 a pop. -Each dealer was selling some type of silver bullion. I saw many transactions take place. -Morgans were king. They comprised the majority of shelf space. I've lost interest in the series so it doesn't do me any good. -The early graded stuff (my area of interest) were insanely overpriced. One dealer had a nice 1795 small eagle dollar graded by NGC for $5,500. I remembered the coin and the dealer from the last show. He told me he would sell it for $5,300. Well, the highest price paid for one in that grade was $3,700. I moved on to his two raw 1799 dollars. Inspecting the first one I noticed that their was damage in the hair. Something had pressed down on the coin causing it to become indented. When I pointed this out to him, he acted like it was the first time he noticed. He wanted $1,600 for the coin. The second coin was in a lower grade but had hairlines. He was asking $1,400. I walked away. Another dealer had an 1860-0 Seated dollar in au-55 by PCGS for $1,300. This is a common date but one that I didn't have. The surfaces were original but these sell for $700 - $800 at auction. I walked away. Another had a 1795 large sent graded vg-20 corrosion by ANACS. Despite the damaged it had a lot of detail. He wanted $1,600. I walked away. Another had an 1806 quarter with nice toning and a green bean. I can't remember the grade but he was asking $2,200. I checked auction sales on my smart phone and ran away. The only one that I might have bought was a damaged 1850 raw Seated dollar. It had good details. Some type of machine had indented one side and caused the other side to protrude slightly. He wanted $300 for it but packed up and left before I got back to his table. I got there late. So I left empty handed again. Not having have much luck with these. Though I did find out about bigger currency show at Kemper Arena on June 8th and 9th. They said there will be plenty of coins.

Thanks for the info. It has been a long time since I went to a large coin show so maybe I will go to Long Beach show that's coming up this weekend. (June 8-10) I've only been to few shows and they were somewhat uncomfortable for me also. If I take my recently started 7070 album, that might bring some attention. I have so many holes to fill

I would have left empty handed too, at that show.

In retrospect, you were fortunate the dealer packed up and left before you had the chance to purchase that damaged Seated dollar. I'm sure you won't look back a year from now kicking yourself from that missed opportunity...lol.

My numismatic interests extend across the whole of numismatics provided that the items I am looking for actually circulated as MONEY, or at least were fully intended for that use. You would think that almost every dealer that has coins on offer that may be of interest to me. That thinking would be correct. Nevertheless, I have come away from a coin show on several occasions without buying anything. Why? On those occasions, I have failed to find a single item that was priced attractively enough for me to consider to buy it. That is OK. For me at least, there is always a huge amount of stock available to look at closely and go window shopping. Always lots to learn.

I've yet to find a deal at a coin show. Every show I've been to here is always overpriced. I tried buying a toned 1958 quarter and half graded by NGC at the most recent show I attended and the dealer wanted $180 for the pair and they were only graded MS65! I've stuck to buying online recently because it isn't grossly inflated. I don't mind paying retail for items I like, but I'm not gonna pay 2x retail for common coins like I saw at this show.
So that show I walked away empty handed. Not the first time and not the last. Happens to a lot of us.

It's so disappointing though to leave a show empty handed.

Quote: But with valuable experience and knowledge. That is true. Two big takeaways from attending these: I understand how collectors get upside down with their collections as well as how dealers make money. I remembered the coin from the previous show. The dealer sounded motivated to get rid of it. I could have flipped it for $400. The details were in the high vf-xf range despite the damage. That's a tough year to find.

What a shame your coin shows are like that. By me we have 2 to 4 shows a Month and all at different places. Some are rather small on the 40 to 50 dealer size. One is usually in the 80 to 100 dealer size. I never could leave empty handed at the larger one. Some of the regular dealers actually look for certain coins for me.

I attended the Jacksonville coin show this weekend. About 60 tables. Lots and lots of raw low grade stuff. Nice graded coins were above what I would have paid. Bought some bullion coins and a couple of type coins from my "favorite" dealer. He always treats me ok. Been buying from him for years.
Going to the summer fun show next month.

I have had similar experiences at a few shows. The past few visits I have made to shows, I was selling to dealers. At least now I know why they are so overpriced... I did pick up some really nice raw morgans from a guy named Burns from Ohio. Only good deal I have found and he didnt return the following show.

Don't worry about going home empty handed.
Spend some time with those who have a little spare time to speak to you, when they are not busy. Extend your network by establishing new contacts and friends. Often, they can be much more valuable than the coins.

Been to plenty of shows like that. Disappointing, yes. I don't buy just to buy. Has to make sense or I'm not buying. This is one reason I have a lot of cheaper series sets going. I collect the early stuff, but am getting down to the tough dates on many series. So, I started a Dansco on Washington quarters (1932-1998) and a Wheat cent Dansco. That way I have a better chance to scratch my itch when I go to a crappy coin show.

Might want to check on where that show is being held, I looked online and think it is at the Sheraton in downtown KC.
