One of my cashiers had a customer pay for a job recently in $20 bills; this was one of the $20's included in the stack (the job was about $900.)

It's a very "interesting" $20, to be sure...

You can do your usual check for authenticity.
Water mark, color shift, security band, etc.

From the picture, it looks genuine. Just beat up.

It's 100% counterfeit. No security strip, no metallics, but surprisingly decent imitation of currency linen paper. However, if you look at the top of the reverse, you can see a glue line and also see that it's printed on stock made of two pieces of linen paper bonded together, which are coming apart. Some of the ink bled through from the obverse onto the reverse, and vice versa.

The counterfeiter went to a lot of trouble to make it look "worn"; that's actually what made it stand out since most of the other $20's in his payment were crisp. In-hand, it "feels" like a worn $20, and without giving it much attention, it passes surprisingly easily.

Cashier did not catch it, despite having a fluorescent light and a pen (tip: they only work when you actually use them...) and the customer was long gone by the time the police were called. They let me keep it, surprisingly, instead of confiscating it, so I put it into a plastic holder and sealed it shut after marking the plastic "FAKE $20" in case someone finds it long after I'm gone and tries to spend it.

Oh, if it does not have security strip, then counterfeit for sure.

Strips do now show up in scan, so didn't realize that. And I'm sure you can feel the difference when touched since raised ink is very difficult to duplicate.

We made up the $20 out of petty cash. I've been with the company 16 years and this is the first time I've seen a fake bill actually passed, despite routinely handling/counting $1000 to $6000 of cash on many a morning and/or evening when the deposit is going out or the tills are coming in.

If it's a fake, they matched the serial number to the correct plate position, also, looks like it has a small black ink mark on the top right side as if was dispensed from a ATM. !!

I don't think it's fake, just a note that has been in circulation longer than it should have.

Even in that condition, you should be able to feel the raised intaglio printing around the "Jackson" area. (if this were mine I would test it with light pressure against my index fingernail)

The OP said it did not have a security strip.....wouldn't that alone make it counterfeit ?

One of these are counterfeit.

I glossed over the OP's 10:02 comment and went straight to converting the serial number to its plate position, as that's one of the ways to check for counterfeits. (need to pay attention to all replies before commenting)

As for the above two notes, again, both serials match their assigned plate positions, but without checking it in hand, I'm guessing it is the bottom note.

Correct, Broken-Coin.

Just like the OP's note, it feels very real but is lacking all the security features.

Seems rather light in color as well, but boy, that's scary.
