So when I first saw this penny I thought it was a proof penny. Just because of how the light reflected off of it, giving it that nice shine, sort of like the lincoln cents that for a given year that were only released as proofs into circulation (1968?), I can't remember the years. I also noticed how raised the devices look from the field, especially lincoln's bust. The coin just looks odd. I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Thanks for any help. The N in Cent on the back looks kind of doubled, and the FG well it looks like the F is touching the G. The letters also look very fat, kind of proof like.

No proof cents were produced by the Denver mint in 1972.

Well, let's start with the obverse. The motto shows signs of master die doubling esp. around IN GOD WE. This is on all dies used so isn't consider a true doubled die, used everywhere. There are signs of die deterioration/over polishing on both sides, worse on reverse. There is a partial filled digit 1 and die wear on 972, with MMD (master die doubling) on underside of 2 upper curve, The reverse exhibits EXTREME die wear/polishing (see enclosed diagrams) and grease filled letters (CENT). Just because it is a worn die it can still be a nice shiny coin with an AU58 grade. Just nitpickin' the fine stuff...oh, FG is over polished away.

Darker brown area are finger prints on the coin. (they etch themselves into the coin and they alter the original surface. As mention this is a business strike cent from Denver. (so far no proof coins I can think of from Denver) Just seeing die scratches on the coin with some previous polishing altering the die leaving the 'FG' and LIBERTY weakened a bit. No premium for this coin. Just a copper coin.

There is no such year, Lincolns have been minted as business strikes every year since 1909 and proofs are not released into circulation by the Mint/Federal Reserve.
