Mike, please enlighten us here. What are you seeing that has so riled your righteous indignation?
I see a digital picture taken with too bright a light source of a coin with bag marks, die marks and a little wear, that is not too much for the given grade. What am I missing?

The area above and to the right of liberty's head look nice and scratched. Unless the lighting is making this coin look worse than it is.

I suspect PCGS viewed most of the scratches as the result of die polishing. Hence not a cleaned coin. Therefore gradeable as original surfaces.

Market graded better date. It would be enough to details a common date but not a better one.

It's really impossible to tell much with those terrible photos. I'd ask for better photos if you are interested in bidding.

I don't need better pictures. The zoom in feature tells me all I need to know. Just getting frustrated that AU Seated dollars with obvious cleaning keep showing up in straight-graded TPG holders. It's nearly impossible to put together a set. EOM

It's clearly a details coin that has been market graded. At least the photos are sufficient to steer away.

The surfaces do look questionable, especially the obverse, but I'm not familiar enough with the series to say for sure. I certainly wouldn't risk it for that starting bid, and thankfully nobody else has yet either.

Good thing I don't have to worry about purchasing coins in this price range. The reverse is hard to tell, but the obverse shows definite scratches from cleaning.

The photograph certainly does not do the coin any favors. Best to see the coin in hand. If you are buying coins from photographs without a return privilege that can be a recipe for disaster. "It's nearly impossible to put together a set" Welcome to the world of Liberty Seated dollar collectors. I have been working on a decade set (1840's) in AU 58 for about eight years now and I am still a few coins short. With a little Karma I expect another 5-7 yrs to reach my goal.

I personally would not have used the flash This closely without a diffuser. It does the sale of coin an injustice. On the other hand some of the 3rd party grading seems To have gotten a little crazy? It's a catch 22, you obviously want to buy slabbed coins to have the security But on the other hand often times the grading seems to have been conducted by a 6 year old. This particular coin looks extremely scratched & polished. Hummm. I guess we'll never know?

Quote: Hover your cursor over the image to zoom in. Hovering the cursor doesn't do anything. I right click and open the image in a new tab so I can enlarge it. (Actually in this case it opens large and badly pixelated. I have to reduce it til the pixelation is reduced and by that point it isn't much larger than the original image.) I will say it does look like graffiti has been removed from the right hand field and the job poorly smoothed.
