I am a lifelong collector of ancient, medieval and antique coins - but a Charles I shilling (in VF condition) has just come into my hands which I have been unable to identify specifically - either its year or its mint, but its grade and quality lead me to believe it may be an early machine-minted example - and potentially worth a great deal. It weighs 5.7 grams and is 30 mm in diameter. The obverse features a left-facing bust of Charles I, the (draped) lower part of which extends to the edge of the coin. The Roman numerals XII are in its right field, and I believe it may be a Scottish issue, as the crown contains a central fleur-de-lys, between two crosses. The obverse legend reads CAR.DG.MAG.BRITAN.FR.ET.HIB.REX. As regards the reverse, this features a square-topped heraldic shield with a crown above (again containing a central fleur-de-lys between two crosses) with what appears to be a small 'T' mint-mark above it to the right. The shield is divided into quartiles, with national heraldic motifs in each quartile - and to its left and right are the (crowned) letters C and R, with dots beneath. The reverse legend (in a ringed circle) reads NEMO SEPARET QVE DEVS CONIVNXIT.

to the CCF family. First, this is definitely the place for a first post, but the first post is usually just to introduce yourself. I'm worried that it might not get the attention it warrants. Maybe a moderator will move it to a UK or "ancient - not quite - forum. If you don't get some relevant responses in a couple of days you might want to repost in a different forum and lead with something like "Unknown Charles I shilling ...".

Second, we need couple of photos. For unknowns in your own area of expertise & interest, that's especially true.

From my limited knowledge of period shillings my only comment would be that it's the correct weight for a shilling but isn't it a little too big? Are you sure it's authentic?
Rest in Peace

Not exactly a shilling wulf, but as you say, a Scottish 12 shilling piece (which passed as equivalent to one shilling in England)!

In England the reverses of shillings read CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO (I reign by Christ's authority) whereas QUAE DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET (what God has joined let none separate) refers to the Union of Scotland and England brought about by the crowning of Charles' father James VI of Scotland as King of England. Another give-away is the use of lions in two quarters of the shield.

It was indeed machine made. Struck by John Falconer, who was Nicholas Briot's son-in-law. His mark (a sideways 'F' appears above the crown).

I will need the picture of the obverse (Head) side to identify exactly which type your coin is. Probably Spink 5560. 1637-42.

Hope that helps for now. T
