If someone submits a coin to a TPG, and the coin has an error, or is a DD, or has some other type of attribution that would demand a premium, but the submitter isn't aware of the attribution, and does not check the box for 'Variety', etc., what does the TPG do? Do they call/email and tell you that your coin has an attribute that could/should be noted in the slab and ask for the additional fee? Do they label certain 'errors' as what they are without the submitter requesting it (1955 DDO LWC comes to mind), or do they just grade it as a regular coin, ie; "1955 1¢ AU53"?

I'm asking because I am looking at a coin that I swear is a DDO in a PCGS slab, but the slab makes no mention of it. It's fairly obvious, so I was wondering why it wouldn't be on the slab label. Anyone have an experience in this kind of thing?

probably because they didn't pay for attribution, to be noted....

So if I had, and sent in a 1955 DDO LWC, and didn't check the box for 'Variety', they would just label it as a 1955 LWC?
Rest in Peace

They won't do it unless you pay for it.

From what I understand, they have to work quickly so there is no chance that if they notice something that they will call you and slow their output. If the fee has been included and you forgot to check the box, they might attribute it, but I wouldn't count on it.

They only attribute certain varieties without paying for it. If it isn't one of them they won't do it. They won't attribute errors for free either and may send it back in a details slab for not using the error service. They don't recognize ever single variety either and varies from TPG to TPG. NGC is the worse in terms of varieties, they attribute the fewest.

Yes the coin could be a DDO with no mention on the label

No.
The TPG's will include the attribution of well known errors automatically.
But ONLY the VERY widely known varieties.
-- 1955 DDO LWC
-- 1942/1 and 1942/1-D dimes
And by "VERY" I mean the ones well known outside the numismatic community too.
