Got a very belated Birthday Present from my Dad. I know that some series of gold was heavily counterfeited. Just wondering about opinions on authenticity and grade.

Thanks!

Beautiful little gold piece that looks genuine and AU55 or 58. Although the luster loss on the cheek shows clear signs of circulation, nice pieces like this sometimes in up in MS60 or MS61 holders.

Authentic, and in nice shape. AU-55, but don't send it in. Keep it raw as a memento of a great gift from your Dad.

Thanks everyone! I'm contemplating on a way to display coins with sentimental value - I also have a $2.5 Liberty Head that my Maternal Grandmother found in a street gutter when she was a little girl (I don't remember the date off hand though).

The 1853 is a dangerous year for the gold dollar because there have been a lot of bad ones. That one looks good to me with an AU grade. It would be a really nice AU if it didn't have that scratch under Ms. Liberty's troat.

It's not an AU-58 with that scratch. Let's try to avoid feeding the "gradeflation" pig.

Here is an AU-58.

I think this would get an AU-58 grade as well. Nice looking dollar.
