Why is that that the only things that are "doubled" are the lettering and the date? Why aren't Lincoln's face and bust doubled, too?

I've asked thus question before, and some have replied that he is doubled, but you just can't see it as easily. Well, I've seen close-ups of 1955 DD and have seen no evidence of that.

Bueller? Bueller?

If I were to guess i'd say it's because the second incuse working hub strike mushed out the details more than it did double them. however, if I zoom in on this image: https://s3.amazonaws.com/NGCcoin-pr...994-007o.jpg I can definitely see doubling on the lips, the front of the hair, the nose, chin, and bowtie.

Also if I recall correctly the 1955 DDO is class 1 doubling, so the devices nearest to the center of the coin will show less or no doubling, and the devices closest to the rim will show the largest spread

Edit: for some reason my link is killing itself when I post it, but if you just google 1955 doubled die I'm sure you'll find a large enough image to see what I'm talking about.

I'll try to give the short answer. It all has to do with the hubbing of the dies, different details are added by what is called a hubbing. Say 1st hubbing is the bust, 2nd hubbing adds motto and LIBERTY, 3rd is date. At each point if die is rotated CW or CCW, shifting of the details happen causing a "doubled Die". MAJOR rotation happened on the 1955P & 1969S dies, Minor doubling happened on 1955P sister dies as well. More than one die was used and could be paired with multiple other hammer/anvil die pairs (obverse/reverse). The mint marks were added in the last stages of die preparation up to 1990. In 1990, the stamping process changed to the single squeeze method. That's the short answer...

There is all kinds of doubling besides the lettering and date...I have circled some of them for you.

Thanks, guys! I never knew that different elements of the design were added at different points of the hubbing process.

Since the 1955 is a Class 1 DDO (rotational hub doubling) with the pivot point for the rotation at the center of the coin, the closer you get to the center the smaller the amount of spread between images. The 1995 is pivoted hub doubling and in that case the point of rotation is right about at the date. That is why there is very little evidence of doubling there, but 180 degrees away from that point (around IN GOD) you see the maximum amount of spread.

Consider this, if the rotation of the 1955 is 1 degree the spread out by the rim will be about .16 mm or 6 thousandths of an inch. (very noticeable) But the spread at a point half way between the center and the rim is only .08 mm or 3 thousandths of an inch (noticeable only with close examination.) Also that close in with very slight spread the act of hubbing itself will then to obscure the previous hubbing.
