Isn't the star designation referring to eye appeal?
If so, personally, I would not give it a star.

Correct. Eye appeal required for designation. No dark or opaque toned spots on my coin, I personally like the look of it. But it would be a nice little bonus if it is worth sending in if NGC likes the toning too.

No eye appeal for me either.
But I'm sure some people will like the toned coin.

I don't like the toning, so I wouldn't give it a star. But others may think differently.

i agree that it isn't deserving of a from NGC..the colors of the toning are quite attractive, the issue with the toning however is it is splotchy and scattered and distracting..i don;t mean to bag on your coin, this is simply my opinion.
Feel free to call me Will.

No worries. the consensus here tells me not to send it in for star designation, bummer. I browsed some star NGC coins on Heritage and noticed a lot of them have that crescent-style or around-the-rim toning. The splotchy toning seems more specific preference. I fell in love with this splotchy toned Quarter I found online and is what persuaded me to buy the Mercury dime (can't afford the Quarter, $4,100).

I'm still learning so, what is a "star designation"? The last time I was worried about stars was elementary school. If it's dependent on "eye appeal", how can a label tell you what's appealing and what is not? Personally, both of the coins posted lack "eye appeal".

If a star means eye appeal then I must need new glasses . this coin has a nice MS-66 strike but that's all you'll get out of me . Sorry for being blunt ,but I call them as I see them .I don't sugar coat any coin that I dislike . maybe some guys like this kind of toning ,but with all do respect count me out of the next CCF member reunion on Blotchy, Scattered Toning . JMHO .

I see no eye appeal in spotty toning like this.

No star for me, the reverse toning isn't bad, but it isn't wow piece.

I think most of us preferred the looks of light pastel/champagne rainbow toning. At least that's how I'm seeing the stars designation coins from NGC.

Is that quarter a "star"? If so, it seems to go against their own standards: Quote: To receive a *, coins must be free of any obvious planchet irregularities, and display no bothersome spots or blemishes. Toned coins can be of a single color or multicolored but cannot have any areas that are dark brown, approaching black.

I'm with the majority here, no star designation. Don't really care for toning on my Mercs. But if it appeals to you then that's all that counts.
