Great little article by the National Post about the history of the Loon coin, and it's 30 year anniversary. I did not realize that Robert Ralph Carmichael's design was supposed to be for a gold coin, but got rejected.

On another note...when reading the article, I think I'll be washing my loonies.

There is a two coin set, struck in silver, celebrating this at the Royal Canadian Mint, the voyageur dollar shaped and sized like a look, is cool:

I am sorry but I feel dumber for having read this article. I can only hope it is a parody...

Some of the remarks are just plain silly. Sure there are more coins minted than there were bills in circulation, but a good chunk of that is due to population growth, inflation and the greater usability of the coins vs. the dollar bills.
Waitresses having to lift weights?
Strippers getting hurt with coins tossed at them? If you were a decent stripper they wouldn't be spending coins on you in the first place.

About the only part of the article that made any sense was the very last one about the erosion of the purchasing power of the dollar itself. What it doesn't say is the RELATIVE purchasing power of the consumer. People are making more money and things are more expensive. If you compare relative purchasing power now to 30 years ago it is the same or even greater, it just takes more dollars to do it.
