My shipment from Charles Davis arrived today.

Charles is a dealer in numismatic literature at vcoins.

Recently, the pleasure I derive from new coin book purchases can outweigh the arrival of new coins!

This particular shipment had a hard-to-find 2 volume set of Davesne, A. & G. Le Rider. Gülnar II. Le tresor de Meydancikkale. (Paris, 1989).

I missed out recently on winning it in a CNG auction and it is rare to pop up for sale anywhere.

I wanted to share my positive experience here with others as numismatic literature goes hand in hand with collecting coins. We see posts about dealers and auction sites etc. but I don't remember reading anything here about dealers of numismatic literature.

Whilst there are online databases, they still have not caught up with the physical references. Also nothing beats flicking through a physical volume of e.g. BMC or an SNG and locating your coin!

Charles has been most helpful, ethical and even partially refunded some postage when he discovered it cost him less than he charged me - though by right he had no obligation to advise me or refund the monies!

Thanks for this post. Always good to hear a positive story of a specific dealer from a member.

Good point. Nor posts about the literature itself, although literary sources are sometimes mentioned in posts about coins. Spence, I've noticed, mentions literary sources frequently. As do others.

Of course the old adage is something like "Buy the book before the coin." Good advice for anyone looking to delve into an ancient or medieval coin series. And Charles Davis is an excellent, reliable source for titles. (I admit, though, that I sometimes struggle with the idea of spending my available money on a reference book when it could be spent on a coin I may have been eyeing for awhile)

Web info is great, but perusing a webpage is just not the same as flipping through a big 'ol book on ancient coins. One of the longtime members of our local ancient coin club just passed recently. We would often have meetings at his numismatic library in downtown St. Louis through the years. It's an amazing collection with literally thousands of numismatics books. It was always a treat to spend time in the library prior to the start of the evening's meeting. I don't know what the family will be doing with all those great old books...

A numismatic library is a must, with all the information available on the web we tend to overlook where the information came from. Gleamed from all those books that we wish we could own but seem to expensive to buy. I'm old fashioned in the sense that I would rather owe the book than read it off the web.

It's has been a long time since I added a new book to my library, but in my current research I needed more information on Biblical Coins. I had the pleasure of meeting David Hendin on the web and was able to purchase a copy of his excellent book on Biblical Coins.

Excellent additions to your library, thanks for posting.

I feel the same way too sometimes. It took me about five years to locate my copy of Biaggi!

While I haven't purchased from Charles Davis, I regularly search through his inventory when I am on the hunt for old numismatic references. Thanks for sharing the positive experience.

In the spirit of the thread I would like to offer the following pice of information. Spink & Son currently has RIC II.1 (2007) for half price (47.50 pounds) on their website. I ordered a copy a couple of days ago.
